David Beckham played a pivotal role as his side LA Galaxy beat Houston Dynamo 1-0 in the MLS Cup final in the United States.
It could prove to be the former England captain’s last match for Galaxy on American soil as his contract expires next month and he has shown interest in finishing his career in Europe.
The decisive moment in the game came on 71 minutes. Beckham flicked the ball on to team mate Robbie Keane, who played in Landon Donovan to finish in style. Despite late pressure from Houston, they were unable to force an equaliser.
The final was a play-off between the winners of the Western and Eastern Conferences and was Galaxy’s first title since 2005. Beckham said after the match: “I’ve loved it here. The fans have been unbelievable – the owners, the players, every one of them are heroes. They’ve been incredible all season and this has capped it off.”
It is his desire to make the Team GB squad for the London Olympics, however, that could be the main factor in deciding the former Manchester United and Real Madrid player’s next move. He will accompany his current club on their tour of Indonesia, the Philippines and Australia, and then it would be no surprise to see him popping up in the Premier League from January. He has been strongly linked with Paris Saint-Germain, but QPR, Tottenham and Arsenal have also been suggested as possible destinations.
At 36 years of age Beckham is still keen to carry on playing, telling BBC Sport earlier in the month, “Right now, I feel fit and still love playing, so I’m not finishing yet.” And few would better against him making the Olympics the swansong to a fine playing career.
