William Hill opened his first off-course betting shop in Park Lane, London in 1934 and since then the William Hill organisation has become one of the best known names in the gambling industry. The company was acquired for £330 million by Grand Metropolitan in 1988 and combined with Mecca Bookmakers formed the second largest bookmaker in the United Kingdom, in terms of number of betting shops.
