Bingo can be traced back as far as 16th century Italy, where a kind of bingo-type lottery called “Lo Giucco del lotto d’Italia” was first played. Two centuries later, a variant of this game became popular in France, where it was known as “Le Lotto” and from there it spread across Europe.
Beano!
However, it was not until the 1920’s, after the game had developed in to a version called “Beano”, that the origins of bingo as we know it today were founded. During one particularly intense game of beano, an overly excited participant shouted “Bingo” instead of Beano, and thus, the famous game came in to being. Since then, many different variations and formats of bingo developed and successfully spread across the world.
Revolution
Bingo experienced a huge resurgence during the late 1990’s just when it was suffering from a severe decline in popularity. Online bingo sites became very popular among experienced players and newcomers alike as they allowed participants to play from anywhere there was an internet connection. This meant that people could play online bingo from the comfort of their own home rather than travel out of their way to their nearest bingo halls. However, many online bingo sites were smart enough to ensure that the social aspect of going to bingo halls was retained and so created chat rooms and other interactive features to ensure members still got the full bingo experience.
Thanks to online bingo, the future of the game now looks brighter than ever.
