Fulham face tough task for Europa League knockout qualification

A goal two minutes from time condemned Fulham to a 1-0 defeat in Holland that leaves their Europa League qualification in the balance.
FC Twente won 1-0 and after dominating possession for large portions of the game it is easy to see how they have lost just once in the Dutch top flight. The away side had their chances, with Andrew Johnson and Bobby Zamora both going close, but it was Twente substitute Marco Janco who had the final say. He converted Emir Bajrami’s cross to win the group for Steve McLaren’s former side with a game to spare.
In contrast, Fulham must now win their final group game against Danish side Odense to be sure of making the final 32. They are currently a point ahead of Wisla Krakow, who have a home game against Twente for their last game, so potentially Martin Jol’s side could lose against Odense and still go through.
However, with a home game against the side bottom in the group, the Cottagers will hope to make sure of their place in the next round with a win. Their cause will not be helped by Andy Johnson’s dismissal in Holland. The striker was sent off for a second yellow card in stoppage time and will now miss the crucial final game.
Fulham could have got more from this game, although with 60% possession the home side will feel their win was justified. They controlled the game but chances were few and far between, although both sides did have opportunities to win.
Ultimately, Fulham were punished by Janko’s clinical finish for his 17th goal of the season. However, Martin Jol will feel confident of securing a passage to the next phase with his side’s fate in their own hands and a home tie ahead.
